Binghamton, NY (WBNG Binghamton) The first ever statewide recognition of New York's heritage is bringing lots of people out to local historical and cultural attractions.

History is alive today across New York State.

In Broome and Tioga Counties, it was a community effort.

Thirty-one historical sites showed off the area's rich industrial, cultural and natural history.

"There is a a lot of enthusiasm for a first time event We really thought we would start small, but 31 people came onboard pretty quickly, and they all have their doors open today," said Gail Domin from Broome County Economic Development.

Binghamton's West side was alive with tourists.

Owners of historical homes opened their doors to let guests in from the rain.

Each open house showcased a home from a different era of Binghamton's history.

"What we saw was what can be done with these west-side houses and how much work folks put into them," said Judy Spencer from Binghamton.

"This Is a Victorian Cottage, and we have two carriage houses on the tour this year, and two colonial revivials. We like to have a variety," said Ruth Levy from the Southern Tier Preservation Association.

On Water Street, the TechWorks workshop displayed early computers designed and built here and changed the world.

Techworks is showing off the history of technology in the area, how a computer processor went from being this size to being able to fit in your hand.

"People who think that the innovative area of this community is past are two-thirds wrong," said Susan Sherwood from CT&I.

"We have a very innovative history and legacy, without question, however we also have a very innovative and competetive present. With the help of investments and school districts and the school systems, we will have an innovative future. There's no reason we cannot be as innovative in the 21st century as we were in the 20th century."

The Susquehanna Heritage Area says it plans to expand the event next year.

It is one of twenty other such areas across the state...

Designated by state legislation in 1982.
